Livestock Policies and Handling - We never know what types of animals we are going to have at disasters, but one thing for sure large or small we’ll care for them, but first you’ll need to learn some of the basics. This introduction course covers some of the basics of livestock care and handling and most importantly safety around these animals. It will look at such things as feeding and special handling considerations, how to move a herd, how to shelter in place, and how to setup a containment system in our shelter or out on the farm.
Medical Concerns in a Disaster Shelter - When Fluffy and Fido are at home, they don’t have the same risk of exposure to disease that they do when housed with a group of animals from different backgrounds. This topic explores how we address common problems; from external parasites like fleas, ticks and mites to internal parasites like roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm, and heartworm. Important information every pet owner should know, it will cover life cycles and also important information about zoonotic diseases that could even affect volunteers. Find out what Noah’s Wish does to keep everybody happy and healthy under one roof.
Search, Rescue and Animal Handling Techniques - This exciting topic will cover the basics of search and rescue including invaluable safety information in the lecture portion of the class. Then get ready for some major hands on experience! Bill Brothers from Animal Care and Equipment (ACES) will demonstrate the proper use of common animal handling equipment, and then you will try it for yourself. What if you aren’t interested in search and rescue? It’s not just about rescue, what do you do when that dog or cat is scared out of its mind and you need to walk it or move it to another cage? The information is practical in the shelter too.
Volunteer Show Case - This is a chance to show everyone your area of expertise. Each presenter will be allocated a 15 minute time slot to explain their area of interest and what they do in an animal related field. There are still a few spaces left at every location, but sign up soon to be assured a time slot. It will be a smorgasbord of great information!
Mega Shelter and Pre Storm Evacuation Procedures – It’s becoming the practice to co-locate human and animal shelters. Learn about the Louisiana - State Animal Response Team’s (LSART) plan to house 3,000 people and up to 5,000 pets all at one site, and how Noah’s Wish is a part of that plan.
Note: At the Louisiana training there will be a 3 hour component at the end of the Sunday session to explain specific procedures and to get trainees pre-registered for the response program.
